How Much Does a Case of Paper Bags Weigh? Real Numbers, and Why Shipping Costs What It Does

Nobody asks this until their first freight bill. Then everybody asks it.

Paper bags feel weightless. One Vogue shopping bag weighs about two ounces. It is genuinely hard to believe that a case of them weighs more than a bag of cement mix. But compress 250 of them into a carton and you are shipping 35 pounds.

Here are the real numbers, weighed rather than estimated, for every case we stock.

The range runs from about 11 pounds to about 43. If you are planning storage, a shelf holding ten mixed cases is carrying roughly 300 pounds.

Why the freight looks high

Two things drive it, and neither is anybody being greedy.

1. Each case ships as its own carton

This is the big one, and it is the opposite of how most online shopping works. When you order four things from a general retailer, they go in one box and you pay for one box. A case of bags is already a full carton. Order four cases and you are shipping four cartons, at roughly four times the freight.

There is no consolidation to be had. The bags are packed to fill the box already.

2. Dimensional weight

Carriers bill on whichever is greater: actual weight, or a volume-derived figure called dimensional weight. For most of our range the actual weight is what bills, because compressed paper is dense. But the lighter, bulkier styles do get billed on volume - the case of 750 Mini Gems weighs 23 pounds on a scale and bills at around 31.

This is worth knowing when you compare suppliers. A cheaper bag in a bulkier carton can cost more delivered.

What this means when you are buying

Compare delivered cost, not shelf price. On bulk packaging the freight is a real fraction of the total, not a rounding error. A case that is $5 cheaper but ships from three zones further away is not cheaper.

Consolidate your orders. Because freight scales with cartons rather than order value, most suppliers - us included - subsidise larger orders. Ours ship for a flat $25 above $175, anywhere in the 48 contiguous states, however many cases are on the order. Ordering three cases at once genuinely costs less than ordering three cases across three months.

Above a pallet, stop using parcel. Once you are into serious volume, freight on a pallet is cheaper per case than parcel shipping ever will be. If you are ordering more than a dozen cases at a time, ask for a freight quote rather than checking out.

Storage, while we are on the subject

A case of 250 mid-size bags occupies roughly the footprint of a copier-paper box but taller. Kraft paper is hygroscopic - it takes on moisture from the air - so keep cases off concrete floors and out of damp storerooms. Bags stored damp lose stiffness in the block bottom and the handles get easier to tear out.

Stack no more than shoulder height. The bottom case in a tall stack takes the compression and the bags at the bottom of it can set with a crease.
